Two Sweet Wins for Vixen Tennis

The Sweet Briar Vixen tennis team traveled to play two conference matches this weekend. The first stop was at Greensboro, N.C. to play the Quakers of Guilford College on Friday, then on to Emory, Va. to take on the Wasps of Emory and Henry College on Saturday.  The Vixens were victorious on the road, taking both matches.  The Vixens beat the Quakers 6-3, and the Wasps 8-1. Sweet Briar now holds an 8-3 overall record this spring, and is 3-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

The highlights for the Vixens include dominating play by senior Virginia Edahl (Charlotte, N.C.) and first-year Moriah Burke (Rockville, Mary.) who are now 9-2 (4-1 ODAC)at the number one doubles position this season. Edahl and Burke both continued their steady play in their first and second singles positions by giving up only six games between the two of them in both matches combined for the weekend competitions.

Sophomore Krista Maldonado (Ennis, Texas) and first-year player Glory Bowman (Roanoke, Va.) teamed up for the second doubles position and split for the weekend with a loss to Guilford in a hard-fought match, and then regained momentum with a strong finish against Emory and Henry to win their team point.

Maldonado owned her third singles court by winning both days without giving up a set.

At the third doubles position, the duo of senior Leslie Polaski (Amherst, Va.) and first-year Ann Roach (North Oaks, Minn.) stayed strong at their position contributing solid play to add to the team win.

Staying strong at the sixth singles position was sophomore Julia Green (Vancouver, Wash.), who also contributed two victories to the team's success this weekend.

The Vixens will host the Roanoke College Maroons on Monday at 3:00pm.
