Opening day was not quite what the Vixen Lacrosse team was expecting. The weather was less then desirable with rain bursts, wind, and the temperature never getting above 50 degrees. The Vixens looked ready to take on the Panthers of Ferrum College, and proved so by scoring thier first goal 30 seconds into the game.
The Panthers answered back three minutes later, setting the pace for the game. It was a back and forth game until the last 2 minutes of the first half when sophomore Sam Schwartz (Pittsburgh, PA) scored two goals in 33 seconds, and teammate Sarah Winstead (JR/ Apex, NC) added another goal to make it 10-8 at the half.
The second half was a battle for both teams as Sweet Briar was only able to knock in 4 goals while Ferrum was able to score 6. Regulation ended at a 14-14 tie, and both coaches and officials decided it would not be safe to play in overtime. Key players for Sweet Briar today were Sam Schwartz who had 7 goals, Stewart Hulfish (SR/ Alexandria, VA) who had 5 goals and 2 assists, and Megan Link (FY/ Great Falls, VA) made 12 saves in the game. "We had a good start today, we were just not finishing the plays. I am really proud of my team and the effort they put in today. First games are always up and down, trying to work out your plays and get out the kinks. We did well," said Coach London.
The Vixens are back in action March 8th when they host College of Notre Dame Maryland at 4:30pm.
