Box Score The Sweet Briar tennis team took to the courts under sunny conditions today, hosting the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College. The Vixens wrap up the weekend of competition with their second conference victory with a match score of 6-3.
Doubles went to the Vixens, with the first doubles team of Ariel Taylor ('14/Springfield, Va.) and Moriah Burke ('13/Rockville, Md.) taking their court decisively over VWC Bennou-Willett, 8-3.
The second doubles team of veteran player Krista Maldonado ('12/Ennis, Texas) and first-year player Andra Brumfield ('14/Altavista, Va.) fought back from a 4-7 deficit to make it 7-7, but VWC team pulled away with the win 9-7.
Third doubles went to the Vixen pair of Jessica Bronner ('14/Haynesville, Va.) and Ansley Smith ('13/High Point, N.C.) with dominating play over VWC, 8-2.
The Vixens went into singles play with a 2-1 lead. Taylor, who has a pre-season ITA ranking of 20th for the Atlantic South region, won her match with a solid straight set victory, scores of 6-0, 6-2.
Moriah Burke took the second court, also in straight sets, with scores of 6-3, 6-4.
The third singles court was the 5th singles match to finish. Because the match score had already been determined a victory for Sweet Briar with 5 points, Krista Maldonado played out a match tie-breaker at the third spot. This match went to the Marlins with a match score of 6-7, 6-1, 1-0.
Andra Brumfield lost in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 in the fourth position.
Ansley Smith, at the fifth singles position, played steady to take her match in straight sets, scores 6-2, 6-2.
At court six singles, Jessica Bronner won with solid play, 6-1, 6-3.
The Vixens (2-0 overall and ODAC) will travel across town on Tuesday at 4 pm to take on the Wildcats of Randolph College in hopes of adding another conference victory.
