The Sweet Briar Vixens headed to Mary Baldwin College on Wednesday afternoon to battle the Squirrels in a double header. It was a scoreless game until the 6th inning.

 The Vixens fought hard behind senior Anna Newberg's (New Britain, CT) arm. Anna pitched all 6 innings, she gave up only 8 hits and 2 runs. Senior Jordan Pugh (Nellysford, VA) scored the only run for the Vixens with a solo homerun. The Vixen's were unable to produce and fell in the first game by a score of 2-1.

In the second game the Vixens jumped out to a 4-1 lead. First year Mandi Catlett (Spotsylvania, VA) led off with a single to right field.  Anna Newberg was in the second spot and nailed a double down the left field line. Nikki Thompson was walked, and it was sophomore Brooke Scott (Houston, TX) who would hit a single to center field to bring in Catlett.  Junior Christen Campbell (Appomattox, VA) would hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Anna, setting the score at 2-0.  Mary Baldwin was unable to get anything going in the first inning.

The Vixens did not get much going in the second inning. The Squirrels were able to get a run in to set the score 2-1. In the 3rd inning, Christen Campbell hit a solo home run, making the score 3-1. It was first year Nikki Thompson who would bring in the final run for the Vixens. Nikki hit a single to left center bringing in the runner in the top of the 4th. Sweet Briar was unable to hold on, they allowed 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th, 4 runs in the 5th, and 6 runs in the 6th.

"The girls played really well, we were just unable to score until the end of the first game. We played some great defense in the first game; Anna really did a great job. In the second game we had some good at bats, and we played well. It was just the walks that got us in trouble. Mandi Catlett is a great lead off hitter, she reads the ball well and knows what to do," said head coach Danielle Delude.

The Vixens are back in action on Saturday when they head to Guilford College. Game time is set for 2:00pm.
