The Sweet Briar Lacrosse team wrapped up its 2011 season Wednesday, falling 16-9 to conference-foe Guilford College. The match was a make-up of a lightning cancelled game last month and was, itself, called with 11:56 remaining due to more storms and lightning.
The first half was a see-saw affair that Guilford jumped out to a 3-1 lead on a goal by Kaitlin Feeney at 7:20, only to see Sweet Briar storm back to tie the game on goals by Brittany Fox ('12/Charlottesville. Va.) and Seanne Weekes ('12/San Jose, Calif.). The Vixens again found themselves behind by scores of 6-3 and 7-4 before Sweet Briar rallied to score 4 of the next 5 goals to tie the game at 8-8. The Vixens would get one more goal in the half from Sarah Winstead ('12/Apex, N.C.). However, the Quakers would pull away with six more goals to close out the half at 14-9 and would tack on two more in the second half to account for the final tally.
Sam Schwartz ('13/Pittsburgh, Penn.) led the Vixens offensively, finding the back of the net three times. Weekes and Fox contributed to the effort with two goals apiece. However, it was Stewart Hulfish ('12/Alexandria, Va.) who made the offense work, collecting assists on four of the nine Sweet Briar goals. The Vixens also received single goals from DJ Abernathy ('11/Annandale, Va.) and Winstead. In the net, keeper Megan Link ('14/Great Falls, Va.) continued her solid play, recording twelve saves on the day.
Sweet Briar ends the season with a 5-10-1 record, besting their 2010 win total by 40%.
