Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Sweet Briar Lacrosse opened conference play on the road at Guilford College on Wednesday afternoon. The Vixens recovered from a six-goal differential at the half and outscored the Quakers 8-6 in the second period, but the effort fell short as Guilford held on for the 15-11 win.
Early in the opening frame, SBC midfielder Sam Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Peters Township) and first-year attacker Allison Hassard (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) each netted a goal to keep the Vixens within striking distance. As the half progressed, the Quakers began to pull away; Guilford enjoyed a 9-3 advantage at intermission.
The Vixens countered in the second period. Midway through the half, the Vixens held the Quakers to only three goals, while netting six of their own. With 13:35 on the clock, SBC's Schwartz would pull the Vixens within three scores off an assist from Olivia Hurt (Charlottesville, Va./The Covenant School). Guilford answered quickly and then tacked on two more scores down the stretch to put the game out of reach for SBC.
Schwartz led a balanced scoring attack for the Vixens. The junior scored four goals and pulled down two draw controls, while sophomore attacker Hurt added three goals and one assist. First-year midfielder Kelsey Barta (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) tossed in an assist and reeled in four draw controls. Four more Vixens tallied a goal a piece.
Caroline Baker (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) recorded a strong showing in her Old Dominion Athletic Conference debut. The first-year goalkeeper made 22 stops on 37 shots.
Sweet Briar next faces Randolph-Macon College on Saturday, March 24. The Vixens travel to Ashland, Va. for the 12 p.m. ODAC contest.
