SWEET BRIAR, Va. -- The Vixen Softball team took the field at home for the first time this season as they hosted Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent, Randolph College. Last week's opening day double-header was postponed due to inclement weather. The WildCats struck first in both games and the Vixens were unable to recover; Randolph swept the twin bill.
In the first game, WildCat pitcher Jessica Sanabria (Burga, N.C./Pender) helped herself to a win by knocking home a grand slam and allowing a single hit on two innings of work. Sanabria had help from teammates Ashley Gardner (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) and Logan Carter (Richmond, Va./Midlothian). Gardner reached base in four innings and scored four runs, while Carter came on in relief and allowed no hits to preserve the win.
Sweet Briar first-year Hollie Halford (Greenville, Ala./Greenville) singled in her first career at-bat at the Vixen Softball Field, while sophomore Amanda Catlett (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) threw all five innings from the circle. Catlett recorded two strikeouts on the afternoon.
Sanabria and Carter again combined for the 1-2 pitching punch in game two. The Vixens generated only two base runners. SBC senior Christen Campbell (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox) singled and Catlett drew a walk. Campbell and first-year Janiecia Mitchell (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton) split time in the circle for SBC. Mitchell closed the game, pitching 2.1 innings and allowing just one hit and no runs.
SBC returns to the Vixen Softball Field on Sunday, April 1. The Vixens welcome Meredith College for a double-header. The first pitch is scheduled for 12pm.
