Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. --- Olivia Hurt (Charlottesville, Va./The Covenant School) and Sam Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Peters Township) combined for 10 goals but the effort was not enough as Sweet Briar fell on the road to conference rival Randolph College. The loss leaves the Vixens still on the hunt for the season's elusive first Old Dominion Athletic Conference win.
The game was a well-contested affair from the first draw to the final whistle. Neither side was able to put the game away until the waning minutes of the second half. Hurt scored with four and half minutes remaining in the opening period to put the Vixens up 6-5, but Randolph countered with a six-goal run that extended six minutes into the second period.
Led by Hurt and Schwartz, the Vixens mounted a serious comeback to pull the SBC squad within one score midway through the final stanza. The WildCats defense answered the call behind the play of first-year goalkeeper Samantha Fagone (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) and her defensive unit. Fagone made 19 stops on 32 shots.
Randolph went on a scoring spree over the final 11 minutes while holding SBC scoreless down the stretch to solidify the program's first ODAC win. Randolph last fielded a women's lacrosse program as Randolph-Macon Woman's College. After over a decade long hiatus, the WildCat lacrosse program revival began in 2010.
Vixen net minder Caroline Baker (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) recorded 10 saves on 24 shots over 48 minutes of play. Sophomore keeper Megan Link (Great Falls, Va./Langley) finished the game in net but was not able to help her side to victory. Link gave up four goals on four shots.
The Vixens have a week break before they take the game field again. On Thursday, April 5, SBC entertains the visiting Maroons of Roanoke College in a 4:30pm ODAC contest.
