Box Score ASHLAND, Va. --- The Sweet Briar tennis team took the Randolph-Macon College Yellowjackets to task in an afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest. The Vixen first-doubles team of Sarah Manter (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) and Emma Merritt-Cuneo (Pacifica, Calif./Oceana) secured a point while the second and third teams failed to convert wins. The third team duo of Yuliya Rigg (Sweet Briar, Va./Amherst)/Courtney Todd (Sterling, Va./Dominion) gave SBC its best chance to win a second team point, but were eventually upended by the score of 8-6. Singles play proved just as exciting.
The Vixens secured wins at the #1, 2 and 4 spots. With all but one match decided and the overall score knotted at four points each, SBC's Rigg squared off with Randolph-Macon's Jessie McCollom (Hopewell, Va./Hopewell) on court #6. Fans knew they were in for a treat as the first set was a duel narrowly decided 7-6, Yellowjackets. Rigg bounced back with a strong performance in the second set, only to have the match slip from her grip in a closely contested third set. In the end, R-MC prevailed and earned the coveted fifth team point for the match victory. The final tally from court six was: 7-6, 1-6, 6-4 in favor of the home team.
Sweet Briar Tennis will regroup and head south for spring break. The southern tour kicks-off with a match against Huntingdon College on Saturday, March 10 in Greensboro, N.C. followed by two matches in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
