Meredith Takes Two

SWEET BRIAR, Va. --- Sweet Briar Softball returned to the diamond on Sunday for a non-conference double-header with Meredith College.  The matinee was designated as SBC's StrikeOut Cancer game and WNRS, the college radio station, was also on hand to add to the festivities.  WNRS provided music and a tailgate for fans of the twin bill.

In game one, the Vixens bolted out of the gate as sophomore Amanda Catlett (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) retired the game's first three batters.  In the bottom of the first, SBC warmed up the bats and generated a run on two hits.  After lead-off batter Catlett struck out, Nikki Thompson (Axton, Va./Magna Vista) was granted first base after being hit by a pitch. First-year shortstop Hollie Halford (Greenville, Ala./Greenville) then smacked a single to left center that moved Thompson to second.  Brook Scott (Houston, Tex./Episcopal) followed Halford's lead and hit a long shot to left field, which scored Thompson and advanced Halford.  Meredith hurler Amanda White (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) then retired the inning's final batter, Elizabeth Snyder (Newport News, Va./Denbigh).

During the top of the second the tide changed in favor of the visitors.  The Avenging Angels put up big numbers and the Vixens were unable to answer.  Christen Campbell relived Catlett in the top of the fourth.  From the circle, the senior gave up only two runs on two hits. In the bottom of the fifth the Vixens put a score on the board, but the offense was quickly shutdown on the inning's sixth and game's final batter.  Meredith captured the 17-2 win.

Campbell started and completed game two in the circle for the Vixens.  Meredith pitcher Jessica Dzeskewicz (Yadkinville, N.C./Forbush) also turned in five innings of work.  While the Vixens were able to limit the runs in game two, the offense was slow going and again the Avenging Angels claimed victory (14-0).

SBC hosts Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent Eastern Mennonite University on Thursday, April 5 at 3 p.m.  The league contest is a rescheduled date from the March 25 rain out.
