Box Score Coach Preston, Vixens Record ODAC Win
ROANOKE, Va. --- Vixen Lacrosse traveled to fellow women's college opponent Hollins University for a mid-week Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday, April 18. With time expiring on the 2012 campaign, both squads were on the hunt for an ODAC win. The Vixen offense, led by Sam Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Peters Township), would strike early and often en route to the 15-2 win.
Amid cloudy skies and steady rain, Sweet Briar set out on a mission from the first draw. Schwartz opened up first half scoring in the 3rd minute of play when she found the back of the net off an assist from Seanne Weekes (San Jose, Calif./Notre Dame). By halftime Schwartz had recorded a game-high six tallies. The junior midfielder was a model of efficiency; Schwartz converted six of seven attempts on goal. The Vixens, who held a 9-1 advantage to start the second period, never looked back.
Olivia Hurt (Charlottesville, Va./The Covenant School) scored four goals in a row down the stretch to push the SBC lead to 12 goals (14-2). First-year Kesley Barta (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) capped Vixen scoring in the final two minutes of play when she beat Hollins goalkeeper Corinne Nicholson (Takoma Park, MD/Northwood) off an assist from teammate Celia Lee (Paeonian Springs, Va./Loudoun Valley). Kimberly Orchowski (Crofton, Md./Arundel), a league leader in assists (42), handed out five helpers on the afternoon.
The Vixen defense, bolstered by the goalkeeping of Megan Link (Great Falls, Va./Langley) and Caroline Baker (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy), allowed just two goals on the afternoon. The net minders combined for a baker's dozen stops on the contest.
Vixen first-year head coach Eboni Preston, who with today's win recorded her career first ODAC win, had this to say about her squad, "I am proud of this team and the way they came out today. We knew from the start today would be tough with these weather conditions. The team battled for the full 60 minutes and came away with a solid win."
Vixen Lacrosse returns to the 'Briar for the final regular season contest of the 2012 schedule on Friday, April 20. SBC hosts Lynchburg College for the 4 p.m. ODAC contest. Four student-athletes will be honored during pre-game announcements as part of senior day festivities: Ellie Bryant (Statesboro, Ga./Charter Conservatory), Melissa Clough (Leesburg, Va./Notre Dame), Weekes and Sarah Winstead (Apex, N.C./Middlecreek).
On Saturday, April 21, Vixen Lacrosse suits up for a match with SBC alumnae. The annual event, now in its 30th year, starts at 3 p.m. on Babcock Field.
