The Sweet Briar College tennis team won its opening dual-match of the season, defeating Ferrum 7-2 on the road Thursday.

The Vixens took two of three doubles points. Caitlin Delmas and Suri Xia won 8-5 in the second spot, while first-years Samantha Yew and Anna Colvin combined for an 8-3 victory over Raquel Ramseur and Damaris Miranda at third doubles.

Following an impressive performance at last month's ITA Regionals, first-year AJ Lukanuski played in the top pairs spot with sophomore Gina Rutledge in the non-traditional season match. The duo were defeated 8-3 by Ferrum's Rebecca Harbeck and Rachel Belcher however.

The Vixens dominated singles play, clinching the match as Colvin beat Ramseur 6-2, 6-2.

Lukanuski was the first off the singles court with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Belcher at third singles, and Delmas quickly won 6-0, 6-1 in the top spot.

At second singles, Rutledge outlasted Ferrum's Kelsey Nicely in three sets, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1.

Sweet Briar will conclude its 2014 fall schedule this weekend at the Methodist Tournament.
