Box Score SWEET BRIAR, Va. --- The Sweet Briar College tennis team opened the 2014 spring season with a 5-4 win over Southern Virginia University. As a result of the recent rains and gusty winds, the match with the Knights was played on the Upchurch Field House tennis courts in the Fitness and Athletics Center on the campus of SBC.
Ashley Fletcher (Durham, N.C./North Raleigh Christian Academy) and Gina Rutledge (Germantown, N.C./South Stokes) combined for the first SBC point of the spring season. The court two pairing defeated SVU's Kirsten Laurence (Bountiful, Utah / Woods Cross) and Micah Roberts (Canby, Ore. / Canby) (6-1). Glory Bowman (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) and Caitlin Delmas (Asheville, N.C./k-12 International Academy) finished next, tallying a 6-1 win over the Knights' Lauren Morrison (Encinitas, Calif. / La Costa Canyon) and Katelynn Tlustek (Bedford, Ind. / Bedford North Lawrence).
On the singles side, Delmas picked up a No. 1 court triumph over Morrison and Rutledge followed suit with a No. 3 singles victory against Laurence. Bowman clinched the match as she recorded a 6-3, 6-0 victory at the No. 2 singles spot and gave SBC its fifth point.
Vixen tennis next takes the court on Wednesday, February 26. SBC opens Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at pre-season favorite Washington and Lee University. The match with the Generals is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
