SWEET BRIAR, Va. --- On Friday afternoon Sweet Briar College returned to Old Dominion Athletic Conference tennis competition. SBC hosted Roanoke College in the league match.
The Maroons took an early lead when it swept all three doubles matches. The No. 1 and No. 2 doubles pairings for Sweet Briar went the distance, but neither could muster the win. Both courts fell by the score of 8-6 and Roanoke took the final match decision 8-1.
On the singles side, Caitlin Delmas (Asheville, N.C./K-12 International) picked up the lone Vixen point. Delmas and Roanoke's Briell Smith (Locust Valley, NY / Suffield Academy) finished under the lights in the three-set affair.
Smith snatched a 7-5 win in the first set and Delmas evened the score with a 6-3 second set win. Deadlocked at one set apiece, the No. 1 singles players continued competing with all other courts decided. Delmas prevailed with a third set tie-breaker win (10-7) and with that victory, Delmas improves to 5-2 at the first singles position.
Vixen tennis returns to the court for two matches on Saturday, March 22. SBC hosts Ferrum College at 11 a.m. and in the afternoon the Vixens face Williams Peace at 3 p.m.
