Box Score Methodist pulled ahead in the second half as the Sweet Briar College lacrosse team lost its season-opener, 15-11 on the road Friday afternoon.
Sweet Briar led 7-4 at one point and was tied 7-7 at halftime, but the Monarchs scored the game's final four goals.
Senior Kimberly Orchowski led the Vixens with seven points on four goals and three helpers, and recorded her 100th career assist in the process. Sophomore goalie Emily Williams made 12 saves in the cage.
Contributing with all-around performances were junior Reba Gagne (3 goals, 6 ground balls, 5 draw controls) and sophomore Monica Ewansik (2 goals, 6 ground balls, 6 caused turnovers, 4 draw controls).
The 2015 Vixen season got off to a great start, with two goals in the opening minute. Ewansik kicked off the scoring just 18 seconds in, and Orchowski assisted Gagne for a 2-0 lead 29 seconds later.
Later in the half, SBC struck four times in just over three minutes for a 7-4 advantage. Orchowski scored off Allison McLamb's assist, and Gagne added a free-position goal nine seconds later. Orchowski added two more in quick succession, with assists from Kelsey Barta and Jackie Burke.
Methodist's Emily Brennen opened the second half scoring to give the hosts an 8-7 lead, but Orchowski's 100th career assist, to Ewansik, evened things back up with less than 23 minutes to play.
Barta tied the game at 11-11, but Brennen scored with 12:29 remaining to give Methodist the lead for good.
Two Maddi Ronelli unassisted tallies sandwiched a free-position goal from Cassie Walter as Methodist closed the game on a four-goal run.
That trio contributed the entirety of Methodist's scoring output, with Walter finishing with seven goals to go with four each from Ronelli and Brennen.
The Vixens won 21 of 28 draw controls and outshot the Monarchs 39-35, but Methodist goalie Emily Ewin came up with 18 saves for the hosts.
Sweet Briar (0-1) will hold its home opener next Thursday vs. Ferrum.
