Box Score Amherst, Va.- Senior Eve Mergenthaler registered four defensive saves, but it wasn't enough to help the Sweet Briar College field hockey team overcome visiting Virginia Wesleyan College, as they fell 7-0.
Mergenthaler, the active Division III leader in defensive saves, added to her career total which now sits at 46.
Sam Jackson opened the scoring for the Marlins in the ninth minute of play with an unassisted effort. It was the first of the season for the senior who would add her second later in the half.
After the opening goal, the Vixens locked down defensively and held their opposition in check for the next 20 minutes. Then the Marlins turned it on and were able to find the back of the goal four more times before the halftime whistle. First-year Ashley Parker scored two goals during the Marlin's offensive explosion.
Virginia Wesleyan added two more tallies during the second half to secure their margin of victory.
The best chance of the afternoon for the Vixens came off a counter attack near the end of the game. Reba Gagne forced Skye Swain into her only save of the afternoon with a shot from the right side of the circle.
Off the goalie save, the ball trickled out to Molly Van Buren, who was wide open in the left corner. Van Buren then ripped a shot that sailed just wide of the far right post and the out-reaching stick of teammate Amanda Terry.
Katie Torretti continued her excellent play in goal for the Vixen as she racked up 20 saves, bringing her season total to 66. That marks a season-best for Torretti and matches her best output from last season.
The Vixens won't get much recovery time as they travel to Frostburg State on Friday night for 7:30 pm matchup.
