SWEET BRIAR, Va.- The Sweet Briar College softball team opened its 2016 season with a home doubleheader against Guilford College on Sunday afternoon. The visiting Quakers won both games, 11-0.
Sophomore Taylor Fischer got the start in game one for the Vixens, pitching all five innings and striking out three batters. Eve Mergenthaler and Tessa Crawford both collected hits in the losing effort.
Sweet Briar's best chance to score in the game came in the fifth inning after Mergenthaler singled and both Rachel Rogers and Amanda Terry walked. But Crawford stepped up to the plate with two outs and was unable to drive in any runs.
Game two saw Mergenthaler take to the circle for the start and pitch all five innings. Nene Jones collected the Vixens lone hit in the game.
The Vixens will return to action next week when they travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. for their annual spring break trip. The team will be playing six games in four days, with the first game on Sunday, March 6 against Medaille.
