Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.- The Sweet Briar College tennis team concluded its 2016 campaign with a strong 5-4 victory over Virginia Wesleyan College on Sunday afternoon.
The day started for the Vixens with a crucial sweep of the doubles matches. On court one, the pairing of AJ Lukanuski and Gina Rutledge downed Jackie Lee and Kellen Phillips, 8-6. That gave the duo their eighth win together this year.
Anna Colvin and Samantha Yew picked up their 10th doubles win of 2016 by edging out Abby Horgan and Jacklyn Cheely, 8-5, on court two. The Vixens final doubles point came courtesy of Des'rae Davis and Alicia Wooten on court three. The junior duo cruised past Francesca Lanuza and Sam Jackson, 8-3.
The Marlins wouldn't go away easily though, as they fought back in singles play. Senior Megan Johnston locked up a crucial point for Sweet Briar on court five by downing Horgan, 6-1, 6-4. The win was Johnston's fifth of the season.
The match was clinched for the Vixens when Rutledge got past Katie Staman, 6-3, 6-0, on court two. Rutledge ended the season with three-straight singles wins and eight wins total.
The win ends the Vixens season with a record of 8-9, their highest win total since the 2010-11 season when the team last made the ODAC Tournament. With only two graduating seniors, Johnston and Katie Craig, the Vixens will be returning the core of their team and looking to make an even bigger splash next year.
