Vixens swat Wasps in 7-2 home victory

SWEET BRIAR, Va. — For the fourth time this season, the Sweet Briar tennis team swept through doubles play on the way to a victory as the Vixens toppled Emory & Henry 7-2 at the Gymnasium Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon.

Doubles play saw the Vixens (7-10, 3-7 ODAC) open with an 8-3 victory at No. 1 by sophomore Emily Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) and senior AJ Lukanuski (Richmond, Va.), while the senior duo of Anna Colvin and Samantha Yew (The Bronx, N.Y.) earned an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles. 

Playing together for the second time in 2018, first-year Julia Bell and sophomore Lacey Tucker (Swansboro, N.C.) picked up their first win as a pair in a 9-7 comeback victory at No. 3.

Wandling rolled at No. 1 singles as she topped Katie Meade 6-0, 6-1 before Colvin clinched the Sweet Briar team victory at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kaiti Sheaves.

No. 3 singles saw Yew bounce Tessa Johnston 6-4, 6-2, while Lukanuski earned the Vixens' final team point of the day at No. 2 with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Kala Curtis. Lukanuki's victory was her third-straight victory at No. 2 for Sweet Briar.

Wandling earned her team-high 10th singles victory of the season, while Lukanuski improved to 9-6 on the year.

Sweet Briar's win over Emory & Henry was the first for the Vixens since the 2015 season, when Sweet Briar topped the Wasps 9-0. 

The Vixens close out the 2018 regular season on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. home match against Shenandoah.
