Murphy named ODAC Swimmer of the Week

FOREST, Va. — After winning three individual events and anchoring a winning relay team on Saturday, Sweet Briar first-year Peyton Murphy has been named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week, as announced on Monday.

Murphy (Norfolk, Va.) is the first Sweet Briar student-athlete to be named ODAC Player of the Week in any sport since Megan Monahan earned ODAC Swimmer of the Week honors on January 26, 2015.

On Saturday, Murphy won every event she competed in and helped lead the Vixens to dual victories over Gallaudet and Guilford in a double-dual. The Vixens' victory over Guilford was the first loss of the season for the visiting Quakers.

Murphy opened the day with an 18-second victory in the 200-meter freestyle, touching the final wall with a time of 2:33.52.

The 200-meter butterfly saw Murphy finish with a winning time of 2:57.42, which was a 35-second advantage over the second-place finisher.

The final individual event of the day for Murphy saw the first-year win by over 16 seconds as she won the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:49.11.

Murphy closed out her day as the anchor of the Vixens' 200-meter freestyle relay team. The Vixens needed a victory in the relay to defeat Guilford in the dual and cruised to a 23-second victory at a time of 2:11.18. Murphy's leg of the relay saw her finish with a time of 31.25, the fastest leg by any swimmer in the relay and faster than any 50-meter freestyle time in the individual event earlier in the day.

Murphy and the Vixens return to action on January 17 at Ferrum with a 6 p.m. start against Ferrum and Hollins.
