Vixens drop home opener to Cougars

SWEET BRIAR, Va. — The Sweet Briar tennis squad dropped a 9-0 decision in its home opener on Saturday to Averett at the Dennis Van Der Meer Tennis Center.

Averett (3-1) took a 3-0 lead out of doubles, with the Vixens (1-5) picking up a game at both No. 2 and No. 3. At No. 2, junior Lexi Culley (Louisa, Va.) and first-year Emily Wrenn (Franklin, Va.) fell 8-1 and at No. 3 junior Ruth Lechner (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore My-Xuan Hillengas (Oak Park, Ill.) dropped an 8-1 decision.

In singles play, Culley picked up a game in a 6-0, 6-1 loss at No. 2 to Eleanor Crane before junior Lacey Tucker (Swansboro, N.C.) grabbed a game in a 6-1, 6-0 decision that went in Inka Zeilstra's favor.

No. 1 singles saw junior Emily Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) battle with the No. 21 player in the nation, Heidi Sarkkinen. Sarkkinen, ranked No. 8 in the region, picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Wandling.

Wrenn fell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5, while Hillengas dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 6.

Sweet Briar opens ODAC action on Tuesday, with a 3 p.m. opening serve against Roanoke in Salem, Va.
