Vixens fall in ODAC opener to Maroons

SALEM, Va. — Despite a battle at No. 1 singles, the Sweet Briar tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to Roanoke in the ODAC opener at the Elizabeth Campus Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

The Maroons (5-2, 3-0 ODAC) toppled the Vixens (1-6, 0-1 ODAC) in doubles action, before sweeping Sweet Briar in singles play. 

Junior Lacey Tucker (Swansboro, N.C.) won one game at No. 3 singles, while junior Lexi Culley (Louisa, Va.) won two games at No. 2.

The biggest battle of the day came No. 1, where Jessica Kennedy topped junior Emily Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) 6-4 in the opening set. Wandling battled back in set two, knocking off Kennedy 6-3 in the second set. A third-set tiebreaker fell to Kennedy by a score of 10-8.

Sweet Briar heads back home to the Dennis Van Der Meer Tennis Center on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. meeting with the Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels.
