Vixens cruise to victory over Fighting Squirrels

SWEET BRIAR, Va. — Junior Lexi Culley picked up her first singles win of the season and clinched victory for Sweet Briar, as the Vixens earned an 8-1 home win over Mary Baldwin on Wednesday afternoon at the Dennis Van Der Meer Tennis Center.

Juniors Emily Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) and Lacey Tucker (Swansboro, N.C.) earned Sweet Briar's (2-6) first point when they topped Mary Baldwin's (0-4) Esperanza Adena and Julia Kelly, 8-0.

Culley (Louisa, Va.) and sophomore Ruth Lechner (Baltimore, Md.) won 8-0 at No. 2, while first-year Emily Wrenn (Franklin, Va.) and sophomore My-Xuan Hillengas (Oak Park, Ill.) earned an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles to sweep pairs action for the Vixens.

The first singles point for Sweet Briar came as Wandling cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Kelly.

The match was clinched at No. 2 singles, where Culley picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win over Brenda Korlison.

Tucker won at No. 3 singles, finishing her match 6-0, 6-1 over Lucie Oechalin.

The seventh Sweet Briar point came at No. 5 singles, where Wren topped Olivia Anderson 6-0, 6-2.

Sweet Briar's final team point came at No. 6 singles as Hillengas edged Alexis Gonzales 6-3, 6-1.

The Vixens return to ODAC action on Friday, with a trip to Bridgewater and a 3:30 p.m. start against the Eagles.
