Trio of Vixens earn singles victories; Hollins edges Sweet Briar

ROANOKE, Va. — The Sweet Briar tennis team battled to three singles victories on Tuesday afternoon, but host Hollins escaped with a narrow 5-4 victory at the Batten Tennis Center.

Juniors Emily Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) and Lacey Tucker (Swansboro, N.C.) earned the first victory of the day for Sweet Briar, topping Sarah Snoddy and Valerie Sargeant 8-4 at No. 1 doubles.

Wandling picked up her second win of the day at No. 1 singles, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Kateri Johnson. Wandling's victory was her 12th of the season and her sixth-straight victory for the Vixens.

Losses for Sweet Briar at No. 2, No. 3 and No.5 singles allowed Hollins to clinch victory from Sweet Briar, but the Vixens snagged two additional wins before the day was over.

At No. 6 singles, sophomore Julia Bell (Dallas, Texas) toppled Anna Holland 6-2, 6-4 for her second win of the year.

No. 4 singles saw sophomore Ruth Lechner (Baltimore, Md.) close out the matchwitha 6-2, 6-2 victoryover Elizabeth Eubank. Lechner's victory was her third of the season and second ODAC victory.

Sweet Briar concludes the 2018-19 season on Saturday, with a 10 a.m. visit to Virginia Wesleyan.
