SWEET BRIAR, Va. — A frenetic Sweet Briar comeback, led by hat tricks from juniors Victoria Lawson and Kierstan Mullins, fell just short on Wednesday afternoon as the Vixens were edged 12-9 at Babcock Field by Hollins.

Mullins (Richmond, Va.) opened the scoring for the Vixens (2-11) nearly two minutes into the game when she tallied an unassisted goal at 28:35.

Hollins (4-6) responded to Mullins' goal with six-straight goals to close out the opening half with a 6-1 advantage.

Hollins' Allie Helmbrecht scored her fourth goal of the day to open the second period, but six minutes later the Vixens added a second goal when Lawson (Shipman, Va.) found the back of the net on a free position opportunity.

Junior Maciel Garcia (Occoquan, Va.) cut the deficit to four goals when she scored Sweet Briar's third goal of the day.

Helmbrecht scored back-to-back goals to push Hollins' lead to 9-3, but the Vixens again responded by scoring five-straight goals in a little over eight minutes.

The Vixens' fourth goal of the game came with 15:29 on the clock, when Lawson scored her second free position goal of the half.

Mullins matched Lawson's goal total with her second goal coming at 14:50.

Sophomore Caylin Newman (Bedford, Va.) scored the sixth Sweet Briar goal, while Lawson completed her hat trick less than four minutes later.

Garcia added a second tally to her goal total with 7:04 remaining.

Sydney Strange scored the would-be game winner for Hollins with 6:39.

Mullins' hat trick was completed with the Vixens' ninth goal just inside the five-minute mark.

Helmbrecht would wrap-up the game with two additional goals free position goals to help Hollins escape with a 12-9 victory.

Lawson and Mullins finished the day with three goals each, while Helmbrecht led Hollins with eight.

Mullins led Sweet Briar with five draw controls, while Lawson picked up a team-high seven caused turnovers and four ground balls. First-year LaLa Martinez (Richmond, Va.) caused six turnovers for the Vixens.

In goal, sophomore Sammy Holton (Arbutus, Md.) recorded nine saves.

Sweet Briar wraps up the season with a pair of wins, the most for the Vixens since the 2015 season saw Sweet Briar post a 5-12 mark on the season.

Lawson finished the season with 30 goals, the most for a Vixen since Monica Ewansik scored 34 goals in 2015.

Holton's 116 saves on the season are the most by a Sweet Briar goalkeeper since Caroline Baker's 177 saves during the 2013 season.
