Kotany wins D Singles regional title; Vixens wrap-up fall slate

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Sweet Briar first-year Kate Kotany won the D Singles regional title on Sunday at the 2019 ITA Division III Southeast Regional, hosted by Mary Washington, winning the final in a three-set battle against Clara Farrehi of Haverford.
 
After knocking off opponents from Virginia Wesleyan and Haverford in the opening two rounds on Saturday, Kotany (Erd, Hungary) opened Sunday's singles action with a dominant two-set victory (6-3, 6-0) over Salisbury's Sarah Dover.
 
Kotany met Farrehi in the finals dropping a 5-7 decision in the opening set, before cruising to a 6-2 second set victory to force a third-set tiebreak. Kotany and Farrehi battled, with Kotany earning a 10-7 win to clinch the D Singles regional title.
 
The B Doubles draw included a semifinal appearance by Sweet Briar first-year Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) and senior Emily Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.). After earning victories over pairs from Johns Hopkins and Haverford on Saturday, de Souza and Wandling fell 8-2 to eventual B Doubles champions from Johns Hopkins – Christina Huynh and Amanda Ruci.
 
First-year Allison Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) advanced to the consolation semifinals of the B Singles draw after earning a walkover victory against Madison Hutchins of Washington and Lee. In the semifinals, Allison Wandling defeated Christine Zalameda of Virginia Wesleyan 8-4 in a pro-set. Consolation finals were not scheduled to be played at the regional tournament.
 
Like her little sister in the B Singles draw, Emily Wandling reached a consolation final that would not be played. Emily Wandling opened singles play on Sunday with an 8-1 win over Bridgewater's Nicole Shifflett before an impressive 8-1 win over Randolph's Sarah Mueller in the consolation semifinal of the C Singles draw.
 
In the Championship Draw, de Souza fell 8-7 in the first consolation round to Irene Meng of Washington (Md.).
 
Kotany and Allison Wandling won a pair of consolation doubles matches, knocking off Francesca Varela and Darian Yakhnis of Wilkes 8-3 in the consolation quarterfinal and Franklin and Marshall's Samantha Perry and Sky Victor 8-5 in the consolation semifinal.
 
The regional tournament, held at the University Tennis Center, was the final fall event for the Sweet Briar tennis program in the 2019-20 season.
 
At the conclusion of the fall season, Allison Wandling holds a 7-1 singles record and one individual title as the main draw singles champion at the Battle of the Blue Ridge. In addition to the winning the D Singles draw at the ITA Southeast Regional, Kotany boasts a 7-2 singles record heading into the spring and holds a four-match winning streak at the end of the fall slate. Emily Wandling will carry a 5-4 mark into the spring, while de Souza enters the spring 3-3.
 
In doubles, the duo of de Souza and Emily Wandling enter the spring 7-1, with de Souza 10-1 in doubles overall after pulling double duty at the Battle of the Blue Ridge. Kotany and Allison Wandling will enter the spring 5-3 in doubles action, while sophomore Emily Wrenn (Franklin, Va.) rides a 3-0 doubles record into the spring.
 
Sweet Briar's spring schedule is scheduled to open on February 23, with an Old Dominion Athletic Conference meeting with Guilford in Greensboro, N.C. The Vixens are scheduled to open the home slate on March 4 with a doubleheader of home matches against Trinity Washington and Washington and Lee. The full spring schedule be released on September 30.
