FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Junior
Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) took down Cassidy Landau of Franklin & Marshall, 6-1, 6-2, and Anjali Devireddy of Johns Hopkins, 6-2, 7-5 today to advance to the semifinals of the Division III Women's Southeast ITA Regionals.
Making Sweet Briar history, de Souza will face off against Gabi Moss of Washington and Lee tomorrow for a spot in the finals.
Also competing in singles play today was junior
Sofia Andrade (Latacunga, Ecuador) who defeated Inka Zeilstra, 8-6, in the bracket four semifinals before falling to Paula Ryhsen in the finals, 8-6.
The pairing of de Souza/Wandling dropped a tough 8-6 match to Carnegie Mellon in the semifinals of the championship doubles bracket.
Highlights
- This is the first trip for de Souza to the semifinals of the championship bracket, as well as the best showing for a Vixen at the tournament in program history.
- Andrade's bracket four finals match marks the best result by a member of Sweet Briar tennis in that bracket.
- de Souza/Wandling also made history, advancing to the main doubles draw semifinals for the first time in Sweet Briar history.
