SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Sweet Briar College has announced the hiring of Jason Vittone as the new Director of Athletics today, Nov. 3. Vittone, who has served as the Director of Athletics at William Woods University since 2011, brings over 25 years of experience in higher education and intercollegiate athletics. He is set to start in his new role on Nov. 29.
As the Director of Athletics and Advancement Officer at William Woods, an NAIA institution in Missouri, Vittone was responsible for overseeing the university's 21 varsity sports. Under his leadership, the Owls have won five consecutive American Midwest Conference (AMC) Presidents' Cups, brought 20-plus companies on board to their corporate sponsorship program, signed the first-ever NAIA apparel and team sponsorship program and has hosted the 2014 and 2015 NAIA Women's DI Basketball National Championship.
"I am delighted to let you know that Jason Vittone will be joining us on Nov. 29…" President Meredith Woo said in a statement to the Sweet Briar community on the hiring. "Jason brings a wealth of experience to Sweet Briar. He has worked in higher education for more than 25 years in various positions at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I and II and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletic (NAIA) institutions."
Personally, Vittone has served as Chair of the AMC and was named the conference's Athletic Director of the Year twice in 2013-14 and 2015-16.
Prior to his time at William Woods, Vittone worked in the admissions department at Central Methodist University and coached collegiate baseball for 16 years. Notably, he was responsible for creating the baseball program at Brescia University and led the team to five NAIA Regional appearances in nine season.
Vittone was also inducted into the Emporia State University Health, Physical Education and Recreation Hall of Honor in 2017 where he earned his Master of Science degree in health, physical education and recreation and served as the assistant baseball coach. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Illinois State.
