Indoor Track & Field Wraps Up Day One of Liberty Open

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Sweet Briar College indoor track & field team wrapped up day one of the Liberty Open today with the 60-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 1000-meter run and long jump competitions.

First-year Electra McPherson (Madison Heights, Va.) set a new program record and personal-best time of 8.68 in the preliminaries as she placed 66th. Senior Julianna McIntyre also had a strong showing in the race with a time of 8.83 to best her previous PR by .10. Rounding out the field of competitors for the Vixens were first-year Veronica Barney (Leesburg, Va.) and senior Molly Booth (Orono, Maine) who recorded times of 9.06 and 9.46, respectively.

McPherson also led the way in the 200-meter dash finals with a time of 29.58 to place 86th and set a new personal record by one second. McIntyre crossed the finish line right after her at the 29.71 mark followed by Alia Peets in 30.37.

Sweet Briar placed 95th – 98th as Barney finished the race in 31.40, Booth in 31.99, junior Jaiana Gray in 37.40 and first-year Kathleen Borum in 48.15.

Junior Carolina Wilson (Hedgesville, W. Va.) was the lone entry in the 1000-meter run finals and crossed the finish line in 24th with a time of 3:56.89.

Barney also bested herself in the long jump finals with a jump of 14' 2 ¼" placing her in 48th.

"The girls did such a great job today of setting new standards for Vixen Track & Field," remarked head coach Joanna Friesen. "Electra had quite the day with an impressive PR, and school record, in both the 60-meter and the 200-meter. The rest of the sprints squad had a day full of PRs as well. All of them PR'd in the 60 and 200. Additionally, Veronica improved her record in the long jump for a collegiate PR and Carolina set a new mark for herself and Sweet Briar in the 1000-meter. Coach Sully and I are excited to see what the girls do tomorrow in the 400-meter, triple jump and 800-meter."

Highlights
  • Both Barney and Booth recorded new personal-best times in the 60-meter.
  • New personal bests were recorded by Barney, Booth, Borum, Gray McIntyre and Peets in the 200-meter.
