The Sweet Briar Volleyball team traveled to Roanoke College for
the Maroon Classic Invitational Tournament held Friday and Saturday
where the Vixens went 1-3 for the weekend.
In game one on Friday against the Ferrum Panthers, the Sweet
Briar team lost 3-0 with game scores of 14-25, 17-25, 14-25.
Cassidy Jones ('11/Rustburg, Va.) had a team high of five kills and
fellow junior Ashley Winters (Mechanicsville, Va.) contributed 14
digs defensively. Laura Jett ('10/Littleton, Colo.) put in
nine digs for the team effort.
Against conference foe Emory and Henry in game two Friday night,
the Vixens fell by scores of 11-25, 10-25, and 15-25, going 0-2 for
the first half of the tournament.
Saturday's games gave the Vixen squad an upward turn as Sweet
Briar defeated another conference rival, Randolph College,
3-0. Ashley Winters led the team with 9 kills and no errors
for the game, in addition contributed defensively with 12
digs. Sophomore Alexis Rukenbrod (Laurel, Md.) totaled 14
assists, while Laura Jett chipped in with nine digs for the Vixen
victory. Scores for the Vixens were 25-21, 25-18, and 25-16
respectively.
The fourth and final game for Sweet Briar College put them
against Southern Virginia University. Although a great effort
coming off the win over Randolph, the Vixens could not hang on and
lost 1-3 with scores of 25-23, 15-25, 12-25, and 12-25.
The next match up for the Vixen Volleyball team will be next
Saturday, September 12 at Dickensen College where they will play
Mary Baldwin College at 1:00 pm and Dickensen at 3:00 pm.
