Box Score SWEET BRIAR, Va. --- Washington and Lee
first-year midfielders Holley Beasely (Virginia Beach, Va.) and
Katie Rossi (Wyoming, Del.) each turned in five point performances
as the Generals defeated the Vixens 8-0 in Old Dominion Athletic
Conference play on Saturday afternoon. Seanne
Weekes ('12/San Jose, Calif.), who made her season debut in net
for Sweet Briar College, was tested early and often. At the
game's end, W&L totaled 44 shots and recorded seven
corners.
The Vixens withstood waves of attack in the opening stages of
the game. Then nearly eight minutes into the match, Rossi
connected with Beasely for the first W&L score. In the
12th minute, Rossi again sent in a cross from the left side, this
time connecting with Emily Scott ('15/Port Murray, N.J.) on a
mimeographed play. Midway through the first half, Scott
recorded an assist when Beasely headed home a well placed cross
from the right side. Julia Lancaster ('15/Atlanta, Ga.) and
Allie Espina ('12/Gaithersburg, Md.) rounded out first half scoring
to put the Generals up 5-0.
After intermission, the Vixens continued playing in a compact
formation on the defensive end. Any offensive threat from the
Vixens was quickly snuffed out by the Generals. W&L
goalkeeper Emily Leary ('12/Cincinnati, Ohio) saw little action in
goal as the Vixens took no shots and generated no corners for the
game.
Rossi had a hand in the opening goals of the second half for
W&L. She put away a shot for a score in the 55th
minute and assisted on Lauren Williams' ('15/Henrico, Va.) goal
three minutes later. The W&L midfield dictated play for
much of the game, the Generals' back line offered support when
needed. Defender Alex Todd ('13/New Orleans, La.) capped
General scoring by blasting home a header off a corner sent in by
Hannah Sackfield ('13/Louisville, Ky.)
With the loss the Vixens fall to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in
conference play. SBC next faces Eastern Mennonite University
on the road Tuesday afternoon at 4pm.
