Box Score AMHERST, Va. --- Yellow Jacket Erin Hauser
('13/Keswick, Va.) scored three goals and Jen LaBarge
('15/Gambrills, Md.) tacked on another to lead Randolph-Macon
College four goals to zero past Sweet Briar College. Earlier
in the day, with over an inch of rain falling in the area, the 4pm
match looked to be in re-schedule jeopardy. Due to conditions at
Babcock Field, the mid-week Old Dominion Athletic Conference
contest was moved to the turf field at neighboring Amherst County
High School and the kick-off was pushed to a later start time.
Randolph-Macon, who controlled the ball for much of the evening,
looked to attack from the start. Within the first three minutes,
the 'Jackets were whistled offside (the first of six offenses on
the night) and put up three shots. The high pressure paid
dividends minutes later. Nelms passed a through ball to a rushing
Hauser who slipped a shot just past Vixen keeper Seanne
Weekes ('12/San Jose, Calif.) for the opening score at the 4:31
mark.
In the 18th minute Hauser scored again, this time off
a corner sent in by LaBarge. The Vixens would settle in and
hold the visitors scoreless for the remainder of the first
half. The second period opened in similar fashion to the
first. The Randolph-Macon squad fired a barrage of shots and
was whistled offside before finally breaking through in the
62nd minute on an unassisted goal by Hauser. With
that score, Hauser notched her second hat trick of the
season.
Just over two minutes later, LaBarge recorded a goal to go with
her first half assist when she deftly tucked a shot just inside the
right post to beat a diving Weekes. SBC forwards Emily Spivey
('15/Dillwyn, Va.) and Sierra
Palmieri ('12/Ft. Collins, Colo.), with help from midfielders
Rachel
Buechler ('14/Chesapeake, Va.) and Alison Lifka
('13/Asheville, N.C.), provided a few half-chances on offense for
the Vixens, but nothing came of the effort. The LaBarge
tally finalized scoring for the game, giving R-MC a four goals to
none advantage.
"Both sides came out with pace tonight. I think the
weather and the venue change to a turf field under the lights
provided an electric atmosphere," commented Vixen head coach Kevin
Fabulich. Battles for possession in the midfield were
intense. The game's six fouls were all blown in the center
third. "The effort was solid and the intensity level high,"
continued Fabulich. "It was a fun game to coach; everyone was
into it, we just didn't execute on the offensive end."
With the loss the Vixen record falls to 1-10 overall and 0-8 in
conference. Sweet Briar next heads to Salem, Va. for an ODAC
contest under the lights at Roanoke College on Friday, October
14. Kick-off is scheduled for 6pm.
