Friday Night Lights, Vixens Travel to Salem for ODAC Match with Maroons

Box Score

SALEM, Va. --- On the eve of Sweet Briar College's Homecoming, the Vixen Soccer team traveled to Salem for a Friday night Old Dominion Athletic Conference match with Roanoke College.  Both teams entered the game having dropped their previous conference matches and both teams entered the game looking to dent the win column.  A trio of Maroon juniors netted goals to lead Roanoke past Sweet Briar by the score of 5-0.  Senior Vixen net minder Seanne Weekes (San Jose, Calif.) recorded 18 stops on the evening.

In the opening stanza, the Maroon offense pushed the pace; they created six corner kick opportunities and fired nine shots on frame.  In the 17th minute Carmen Graves (Christiansburg, Va.) collected a rebound and scored a goal to put the Maroons on the board.  Three minutes later Jamie Johnston ('12/Wallingford, Pa.) banged a shot off the post, but teammate Rebekah Adams (Sprinfield, Va.) was in the right place at the right time – she knocked home the carom to give Roanoke a two-goal advantage.

Graves scored her second tally of the evening in the 33rd minute off a breakaway and with intermission only seconds away, Devon Harell ('15/Nahant, Mass.) connected with Stephanie Parenteau (Virginia Beach, Va.) for the game's fourth goal.  After halftime, a rejuvenated Vixen side took the pitch.  The Vixens came out hard; tactically they defended better.  They held the Maroons scoreless until the 86th minute when Parenteau struck again, this time from 30-yards out.

According to first-year Vixen assistant coach Amy Dahlin, "our team made good choices on the field, we just had difficulty executing. We put in a solid effort, particularly in the second half."  Vixen defender Rebecca Buechler ('14/Chesapeake, Va.) was busy all night – tracking down streaking forwards and through balls from the Maroons.  SBC midfielder Rachel Buechler ('14/Chesapeake, Va.) and forward Sierra Palmieri ('12/Ft. Collins/Colo.) also turned in strong performances for the Vixen side.  They were both instrumental in pushing the ball forward on attack.

The Vixen Soccer team now sets its sights on the season's final two games.  On Wednesday, October 19, Hollins visits for a 4pm match at Babcock Field.  The season concludes on Saturday, October 22 with a 2pm game against Emory & Henry College.  Prior to next Saturday's contest, the Vixen Athletic department will recognize six senior soccer players as part of Senior Day festivities.
