Box Score The Sweet Briar soccer team held the 2nd-ranked team in the nation scoreless in the first half, but Lynchburg struck quickly after the break for a 6-0 victory on Wednesday at Babcock Field.
The Hornets came into the game ranked #2 in the latest D3soccer.com top-25 poll (with the same point total as #1 Messiah) and #3 in the NSCAA coaches poll. Still the Vixens held them at bay for over 45 minutes with an organized and committed defense.
Despite missing senior captain Marissa McCord in the center of the defense, a backline of Ashley Federico, Stephanie Scott, Kelsey Barta and Jax Bullett held off Lynchburg in the opening period. First-year Jaden Nichols moved into a center midfield role, where she and Kaila Beale were winning balls all throughout the half.
Sweet Briar couldn't maintain that level coming back onto the field however, as the Hornets scored twice in a 30-second span. Jade Woll took a pass off the foot of a Vixen and scored, and Angela Bosco's pass skipped through to Dessi Dupuy, both in the 48th minute.
Bosco and Dupuy, two of the top-30 goalscorers in the nation this season, both scored twice in the second half for the visitors.
Junior Kat Day had a great game in goal for Sweet Briar, totaling 13 saves. She also came off her line to thwart several potential chances early in the game.
Dupuy had the best chance of the first half, volleying a shot off the left post within the opening 10 minutes.
Lynchburg beat the offsides trap in the 11th minute but Bosco's breakaway was saved by Day. Seconds later, Day made a good save on Bosco and Dupuy put the rebound high.
Day came out to slow another Bosco breakaway, with the LC forward's touch around the keeper taking her too far wide. Bosco kept attacking, cutting inside and shooting at Day in the 27th minute.
Day made a diving save off a corner kick to block Sarah Schrader's header. Hannah Olds had a great chance late in the first half but Bullett stepped in at the last second to block it away.
After taking a 2-0 lead, Bosco made it three by tapping in Woll's cross from the left side.
The Hornets added another two-goal burst in under a minute, with Bosco and Dupuy converting in quick succession for a 5-0 scoreline.
Day continued to come up big, making a fingertip save on Bosco early in the second half. Later on, she denied Daisy Thomas and then made a breakaway stop on Morgan Singer.
Sweet Briar falls to 6-7, 3-7 ODAC and will host Bridgewater on Saturday in the Vixens' final home game of the season. Lynchburg improves to 17-0, 11-0.
