Vixens claim three titles at inaugural Battle of the Blue Ridge

Box Score SWEET BRIAR, Va. — First-year Allison Wandling won the main draw singles championship, while senior Emily Wandling and first-year Ruth de Souza were the main draw doubles champions at the inaugural Battle of the Blue Ridge at the Dennis Van Der Meer Tennis Center on Sunday.
 
Sweet Briar had two student-athletes compete in the finals of the main singles draw and put two doubles teams in the main draw doubles final.
 
Entering the day with three singles players competing in the semifinals of the main singles draw, Sweet Briar's day in singles got underway with Allison Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) squaring off with Samantha Sepe of Brevard. Wandling, the No. 4 seed, battled in the opening set for a 6-4 set victory against the No. 1 seeded Sepe. Wandling rode a hot hand into the second set, cruising to a 6-2 win in the second frame.
 
The second semifinal match put No. 3-seed Emily Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) in a match against first-year teammate Kate Kotany (Erd, Hungary). Wandling, who had only lost one game in the opening two rounds, carried her momentum into the semifinal with a 6-1 opening set before a 6-4 second set to clinch victory.
 
The final was an all Wandling affair, with Allison finishing with a 6-3, 6-2 victory to earn the championship trophy.
 
While singles play headlined the day, doubles action got things underway at the Battle of the Blue Ridge.
 
The main doubles draw final put Emily Wandling and first-year Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) up against Allison Wandling and Kotany. The doubles result leaned the way of Emily Wandling and de Souza, with the pair winning 8-2.
 
Doubles action continued in the pink draw with de Souza continuing play with sophomore Emily Wrenn (Franklin, Va.). Wrenn and de Souza knocked off Josie Cost and Bridget Kilkelly of Catholic 8-1, before recording an 8-1 victory over Jessica Garland and Allison Kogoy of Brevard in the pink draw final.
 
Hosted by Sweet Briar, the inaugural Battle of the Blue Ridge featured four teams, over 30 players and 60 tennis matches over two days. In addition to Sweet Briar claiming the main draw singles and doubles titles, championships were awarded to Sarah Iocovozzi of Brevard (pink singles) and Allison Kogoy of Brevard (green singles).
 
Shenandoah, Brevard and Catholic all finished with consolation titles during the weekend event.
 
The Sweet Briar tennis team continues the fall season on September 14 in Salem, Va. as Roanoke hosts a round robin event.
