Box Score SWEET BRIAR, VA --- Piedmont College entered
Saturday's match against Sweet Briar College with out a loss or a
goal allowed for the 2011-2012 season. SBC would change one
of those stats. The Lions tallied the game's first score in
the opening minutes. SBC goalkeeper Lindsey
Wilson ('14/Bedford, Va.) fended off three quick Piedmont
shots, but Lion midfielder Dilyn MacClean's ('14/Blue Ridge, Ga.)
tenacity in the box paid off as she collected her own rebound and
netted the game's first goal. Several minutes later, the
Vixens would even the score as Sierra
Palmieri ('12/Ft. Collins, Colo.) and Rebecca
Buechler ('14/Chesapeake, Va.) teamed up for the SBC
goal.
The Vixen defense worked the ball from its own defensive
third through the middle and down the right side. Palmieri
deftly beat a defender on the right flank and then sent a laser
cross to a crashing Buechler who expertly headed the ball past the
Piedmont goalkeeper. The Vixen's lone goal was the first
score conceded by the Lions this season.
Just under seven minutes later, an errant handball inside the
Vixen 18-yard box led to the Lions' second, and eventual game
winning, score. Senior Justine Clay (Buford, Ga.) buried the
first of her game best three goals on the ensuing penalty
kick. Five minutes later, Clay would beat Wilson again, this
time with a shot placed just inside the upper right hand
corner. Clay would close out first half scoring with her
third goal at the 33:56 mark. The Vixens found success by
switching fields and feeding runners on the flanks, but a stingy
Lion defense all but shut down the Vixen midfield. The Vixens
ended the half down one goal to four.
The Lions opened the second frame just as they began the
game: pushing the tempo on offense and generating numerous
shots on goal. The Vixen defensive unit had trouble keeping
up with the Lions' speed of play as Piedmont continued to throw
numbers up top. Macie Rooke ('13/Sugar Hill, Ga.) opened
second half scoring on an assist from sophomore Rebecca Johnson
(Decatur, GA). Elizabeth Farmer ('14/Dallas, Ga.) knocked in
a right-side cross from Amber Hyche ('15/Foley, Ala.) for the
game's final goal.
The Vixen Soccer record falls to 1-2 for the season. SBC
begins its conference schedule next weekend when they face
defending ODAC champion Lynchburg College for a 4:30pm match up at
Shellenberger Field.
