BRYN MAWR, PA --- Within minutes of the opening
stanza, Bryn Mawr College set the tone for the Sunday afternoon
match with Sweet Briar College. The Vixens looked tentative
as the game began, while the Bryn Mawr Owl's seemed ready to push
the pace. When the two teams faced each other in last
season's Bryn Mawr Soccer Invitational, SBC earned a 1-0 over-time
victory on a goal by then sophomore Alison Lifka
(Asheville, N.C.). This year the Owls got on the board
early. Senior defender, Katie Link (Cold Spring Harbor,
N.Y.) knocked one in at the near post at the 5:50 mark. Sweet
Briar College regrouped and showed determination as the Vixens
attempted to work passes through the midfield to strikers Sierra
Palmieri ('12/Ft. Collins, Colo.) and Emily Spivey
('15/Dillwyn, Va.). In the end, Bryn Mawr's defense proved
too much as the Vixens failed to net a single goal in the 0-3
loss.
The Vixens received quite a scare just shy of 15 minutes into
the game when first year forward Emily Spivey had to be carried off
the field after a hard tackle. The injury substitution forced
Vixen head coach Kevin Fabulich to juggle his line up. The
move appeared to energize the Vixens, but the spark was short
lived. The Owl midfield, anchored by senior Lizzie Robinson
(Brooklyn, N.Y.), had little trouble switching fields and feeding
forwards.
Lindsey
Wilson ('14/Bedford, Va.) came up big in the net for the Vixens
on numerous occasions. Wilson faced a total of 25 shots, many
of which came in quick succession. First-year
defender Katherine
Buddo ('15/Greenville, N.C.), who would later find herself
perched up top after the line up change, fired the lone shot on
goal for Sweet Briar. The Bryn Mawr midfield and defense
keyed in on Vixen striker Palmieri. While Palmieri earned
multiple corner-kick opportunities for her team, she was held to no
shots.
The Owl's second goal came just over six minutes after
intermission. After a barrage of crosses sent in by Katie
Seto ('12/Irvine, Calif.) went begging, an uncontested Rebecca
Feurehammer ('12/Edgewater Park, N.J.) collected a rebound and
scored from the top of the box. Minutes later Palmieri and Nina
Kappel ('15/Rye, N.H.) combined for what looked to be the start
of a serious attack for SBC, but a swarming Bryn Mawr defense shut
down the effort.
Wilson continued to rebuff shot after shot. Only in the
77th minute did Bryn Mawr beat Wilson again. On
what must be considered the goal of the tournament, Karin Sui
('14/San Antonio) delivered a perfectly placed corner kick to a
charging Feurehammer who headed in the third and final tally of the
day.
The Vixens placed three players on the Bryn Mawr Soccer
Invitational Tournament team: Rachel Buechler ('14/Chesapeake/Va.),
Seanne Weekes ('12/San Jose, Calif.), and goal keeper Lindsey
Wilson.
With the loss, the Sweet Briar College soccer ledger stands even
at one win and one loss. The Vixens return to action on
September 10 when they host Piedmont College in a 1pm
non-conference contest at Babcock Field.
