Box Score Amherst Va.- Before their home finale versus William Peace University on Sunday afternoon, the Sweet Briar College soccer team honored their five graduating seniors, Katie Tillson, Kat Day, Ashley Federico, Tosha Brown, and Nene Jones.
Because of continuous rain fall this past week, the game was played on the turf field at Amherst County High School. The cold, windy, and rainy weather wasn't the only battle the Vixens faced as the visiting Pacers scored early and continued the pressure throughout the game, spoiling Senior Day with a 4-0 win.
Mari Mitterling scored twice in the first half and tallied five shots on the day. Alyssa Gasperini led the Pacers with six total shots.
The Vixens weren't without scoring opportunities though, with their best chance coming early in the game. Des'rae Davis lobbed a ball forward to a charging Jona Cumani. Shannon Maddex, the Pacer's starting keeper, charged the ball, but couldn't clear it cleanly, leaving Cumani with an off-balance shot from 15 yards out. Her shot sailed just wide of the right post.
Tillson continued her excellent play in goal this season, racking up 12 saves, bringing her season total up to 60.
"This is a historic, resilient, and strong group of women who have proven that in the events of the last 6 months. These women will go out into the world and make it a better place for all and will carry Sweet Briar College with them every step of the way. We would like to thank all of you for your dedication and support of Sweet Briar athletics," said Head Coach Amy Dahlin of her five seniors before today's game.
The Vixens will next be in action on Monday, October 12 at Cedar Crest College.
